High-level overview of IBM's data collection and ranking architecture Figuring out what data is useful and how it should be organized is the first step towards building a successful AI model. This takes much of the load of organizing data off of humans and automates it. Cloud Pak for Data helped collect analytics data and optimize it for use by AI models. At the heart of their efforts were IBM's Cloud Pak for Data and Watson Studio. Just as Overwatch is a 6v6 multiplayer game, IBM pulled in a six-person team of data scientists in Germany to study analytics data and help devise a ranking system, dubbed Area 631. Blizzard's Ben Trautman, Blizzard's lead data analyst for Overwatch League, said the company tried "for years" but just couldn't put together a reasonable ranking system. All of these factors make the ranking system a little more complex to implement. On top of that, many characters cross roles, such as Brigitte who has a passive healing ability and more actively-used offensive abilities like stun. Support roles in Overwatch include healing, boosting other players' damage output, and sight of the opposition (Zenyatta's Orb of Discord). While American football - or at least fantasy football leagues - boil the game down to two facets, offense and defense, Overwatch is a little more complex.īesides the damage (offense) and tanking (defense) roles, Overwatch has a variety of support characters whose job is in support roles. The company has done this sort of thing before, such as a trade assistant for ESPN's fantasy football leagues. IBM has developed an AI-powered ranking system that will not only separate the wheat from the chaff, but hopefully also bring the best of the best to the top of the leaderboard. Now that Overwatch League is back on for 2021, the partnership is starting to bear fruit. Blizzard and IBM hope that this partnership will lead to figuring out new ways to evaluate performance, fix balance issues, and much more. At the time, Blizzard and IBM were set to announce that Big Blue was about to become the cloud, AI, and machine learning analytics partner for the game's official e-sports platform.
#OVERWATCH RANKS PC#
In March, high Gold players on PC moved from the 54.7 to the 57.7 percentile, but the average remained the same.Last year's Overwatch League was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and that temporarily pumped the brakes on some interesting AI projects, as well. In May, the entire distribution on all platforms changed, and the average rank (50 percentile) increased. The statistics in June confirmed the changes that took place in the previous month. If you are at Diamond or beyond, do not underestimate your skills! Only the top 3% of the players reached the highest tier in Overwatch. We don’t have official data, so this stat could be biased, but overall both the Xbox and PlayStation datasets at our disposal confirm it.ĭiamonds are a restricted group, and Masters and Grandmasters represent the elite. There are less low rank players on console. The Platinum tier goes from the 48.9 to the 77.2 percentile on PC, including both players just above the average and those in the top 30%. There is a huge difference between low and high Platinum players. Platinum is already a great accomplishment as it represents up to the top 77% of the player base.

A summary of the data (PC-based)Ībout 50% of the players is in the Gold tier or below. The average player on PlayStation is in the Platinum tier: 2552 rank is equal to the 50 percentile. The following distributions are percentile based. Still, the percentage of population covered is huge, particularly for PC, so they can give us a proper idea of the skill rating distribution. These websites do not gather data from all players in the game and are often biased towards high ranked players. It means we can trust the data they provide for the actual and the future rank distributions. I compared these statistics with the ones publicly available through different Overwatch statistical websites, and the distribution is pretty much the same. I believe these are the average data across all platforms. We don’t know if they represent the current ranks or the season highs, and if players on all platforms or only on PC. The breakdown reveals the percentage of players in each rank. Overwatch game director Jeff Kaplan released the tier distribution for the competitive mode in February.
